What makes Louis Vuitton different to care for

Louis Vuitton pieces are not one material. They are several, each requiring different treatment.

The most commonly mishandled element is vachetta leather: the natural, undyed cowhide used on handles, trim, and base corners. Vachetta patinas beautifully over years of correct use, and reacts badly to water, harsh cleaners, and most commercial leather products. A single water mark, improperly treated, can become permanent.

The second most mishandled element is the coated canvas itself. The LV monogram, Damier Ebène, Damier Azur, and Epi leather each have specific surface properties. Abrasive cleaning strips the coating. Inappropriate solvents cause delamination.

These are not edge cases. They are the most common damage patterns we see from well-meaning care attempts.

What we work on

LV pieces we care for at KŌSA:

  • Neverfull (all sizes and canvas types)
  • Speedy (monogram, Damier Ebène, Damier Azur, Empreinte)
  • Alma (monogram, Epi leather, vernis)
  • Capucines, Twist, Métis, Dauphine
  • Pochette Accessoires and small leather goods
  • Keepall and travel pieces
  • Shoes: leather, canvas, suede
  • Belts and accessories

Services we provide for LV:

  • Vachetta leather cleaning and conditioning: removal of surface grime without disrupting the natural patina development; protective conditioning
  • Vachetta handle darkening reversal: for pieces where handles have darkened unevenly or been exposed to water
  • Canvas cleaning: dust, surface grime, and transfer stains on monogram and Damier canvas
  • Epi and Empreinte leather reconditioning: moisture restoration, colour stabilisation, surface protection
  • Interior lining cleaning: pen marks, cosmetic transfer, general soiling on the microfibre and textile linings
  • Hardware polishing: gold-tone and silver-tone hardware brought back without abrasion
  • Handle and strap replacement recommendation: if hardware or handles are beyond in-house care, we advise correctly on Louis Vuitton's own repair service versus restoration

What to expect with vachetta

Vachetta is intentionally left untreated by Louis Vuitton so it ages. This ageing, the honey-to-caramel deepening, is called patina, and it is a feature, not a flaw.

What is not a feature: uneven darkening from water exposure, white water rings on light vachetta, mould on pieces stored in humid conditions, or deep staining from contact with dyes on the exterior of other bags.

We can address all of these. The results depend on the starting condition of the piece and how long the issue has existed, which is why early intervention matters.

We will not over-promise on vachetta restoration. If the damage is beyond a standard treatment, we say so.

Canvas matters too

Louis Vuitton's coated canvases are durable but not immune to:

  • Transfer staining: dye from dark denim or other fabrics rubbing onto light canvas (Damier Azur, monogram on light grounds)
  • Surface dulling: particularly on older pieces or those exposed to UV
  • Corner cracking and peeling: typically on the leather corners, not the canvas itself

We assess each piece before committing to treatment. Canvas issues are often addressed; corner cracks are addressed at the leather level, not the canvas.

A note on authenticity

We work only on genuine Louis Vuitton pieces. We do not work on replicas or items represented as authentic that we assess otherwise. This is not a judgement, it is a practical position. Genuine and replica LV pieces use materially different materials, and treating a replica with products formulated for genuine vachetta or coated canvas produces poor results.

Frequently asked questions

Will cleaning change the vachetta patina?

Correctly done, no. Our vachetta treatments clean the surface without lifting or homogenising the patina that has developed. If patina is your concern, tell us at intake and we will be specific about what we will and will not touch.

Can you remove water marks on vachetta handles?

Often, yes, particularly if the marks are recent. Older, deeply set marks can frequently be improved but not always fully removed. We assess and advise before proceeding.

Can you restore a heavily darkened or stained Neverfull?

We can significantly improve many cases. We will not promise full reversal on severely darkened vachetta, but we will tell you honestly what is achievable before we start.

My piece has mould on the interior. Can you treat it?

Yes. Mould on the lining and on leather interiors is one of the most common issues in India's climate. We treat it thoroughly, including areas that are not immediately visible.

How long will Louis Vuitton care take?

Cleaning and conditioning: typically 5 to 7 days. Restoration work: 10 to 15 days. Quoted precisely at assessment.

On taking care of things that matter

A Louis Vuitton piece, cared for correctly, can outlast its owner. The monogram canvas on a Speedy from the 1970s is in better condition today than one that was poorly stored or cleaned with the wrong products.

That kind of longevity requires the same things it always has: appropriate materials, correct technique, unhurried attention.

That is what we offer.
