How to Care for Your Hermès Bag at Home (And What to Leave to the Professionals)

Hermès bags are built to last decades. The leather they use, whether Togo, Clemence, Epsom or Swift, is some of the finest in the world. But that doesn't mean they're invincible. If you own one, you've probably wondered at some point what you're supposed to actually do to keep it looking good.

The honest answer is: not very much, and very carefully.

What you can do at home

The best thing you can do for a Hermès bag on a regular basis is also the simplest: wipe it down with a dry, soft cloth after each use. Dust, light surface residue, the oils from your hands. These accumulate slowly and they do affect the leather over time if left alone.

If you've gotten a light splash of water on it, don't panic. Blot it gently with a clean cloth and let it dry naturally, away from direct heat and sunlight. Never use a hair dryer. Never rub. Heat and friction are the two fastest ways to damage fine leather.

Storage matters more than most people realise. Keep your bag stuffed lightly so it holds its shape, in the dust bag it came with, in a cool and dry place. Avoid plastic bags or airtight containers. Leather needs to breathe. If you're in Bengaluru, the humidity through monsoon season is something to take seriously. A silica gel packet inside the dust bag during storage is a reasonable precaution.

What you should not do at home

This is actually the more important list.

Don't use wet wipes, baby wipes or household cleaning products on your Hermès. The chemicals in most of these will strip the protective coating on the leather and leave it looking worse than before. The same goes for hand sanitiser. If it gets on the bag, wipe it off immediately with a dry cloth.

Don't attempt to fix colour loss, scratches or stains yourself with shoe polish or leather dye. The leather Hermès uses is drum-dyed, which means the colour goes all the way through. Surface applications rarely match well and can make professional restoration harder later.

Don't leave it in a car during summer. The temperatures inside a parked car in Bengaluru can damage leather quickly, soften adhesives and cause hardware to leave marks on the leather.

When to bring it in for professional care

A good rule of thumb: once a year for cleaning and conditioning if you use the bag regularly. Every two years if it's used occasionally.

If you notice any of the following, it's worth getting it assessed sooner:

  • The leather feels dry or stiff to the touch
  • There are marks or colour transfer that a dry cloth won't shift
  • The corners are showing wear or lightening
  • The handles or strap have darkened unevenly from handling
  • The lining has started to peel or smell

None of these are emergencies, but they're easier to address before they progress.

A note on Hermès after-sales service

Hermès does offer their own spa service, but it has long wait times and is not always available through Indian boutiques. Independent specialist care is often faster and, for cleaning and conditioning work, comparable in quality.

At KŌSA, we work on Hermès leather regularly. Togo, Clemence, Epsom, Swift, Box Calf and Barenia. We assess each piece individually before committing to any work, and we're honest about what's achievable and what isn't.
